Marcus Aurelius was born in AD 131 into a noble family from Spain. From a young age, he came under the protection of Emperor Hadrian, receiving formal education at the imperial court. Later, he was adopted by Hadrian’s successors, Antoninus Pius and Lucius Verus. When Antoninus passed away in AD 161, both Marcus and Lucius assumed the title of Augustus. From AD 162 to 165, they were engaged in fierce conflicts with the Parthian Kingdom, Rome’s only civilized neighboring empire, with the war breaking out in the buffer state of Armenia. During the reign of Emperor Antoninus, the quality of portraiture reached a high level, and this portrait is a prime example of that excellence.
